Moon and Essential Oils

Essential oils, also known as "volatile organic compounds", are chemical compounds found in the bark, leaves, flowers, roots and rinds of plants, fruit and trees. Essential oils are extremely potent plant-based compounds and should be used with care. Only use high quality, food grade, essential oils and if you are a beginner, always discuss using essential oils with your health care provider. Alas, most doctors and pharmacists are not trained in aromatherapy so always do your own research!

A note on photosensitivity: citrus oils are among the most common essential oils that cause photosensitivity. That’s because compounds found in citrus oils—known as furanocoumarins—greatly increase UV sensitivity. And while most photosensitive oils are citrus, other oils can contain compounds or mixes of compounds that have the same effect as furanocoumarins, meaning they’re not sun-safe either. Always check the label before application to determine the oil’s photosensitivity.

Ingesting essential oils: The safest way to ingest essential oils is in culinary dose. Cooking with essential oils is a very safe way to enjoy the health benefits as well as enhance the flavor of your food. Remember that oil and water do not mix so always dilute the oil in coconut oil, olive oil, honey, almond or peanut butter.

Essential oils can be a wonderful complement for your moon rituals. Here are some of the essential oils for every moon phase.
